The mother/daughter relationship is shaped by the fact that both partners are women, that the mother has always been the mother in this relationship, and both parties are aware that their current relationship will end soon, due to either the mother's declining health or her death. Researchers and theorists have given particular attention to the first two aspects of the mother/daughter tie, but have rarely considered specific experiences in the relationship in late life.
