Example text

As a result, this book is, in part, a kind of history of the obesity epidemic, albeit a partisan history, written from my own highly interested point of view. I am not so much concerned here with trying to persuade readers as I am with telling a story about the study of obesity. Yes, I will offer readers the truth about obesity as I see it and yes, I do think that in 2010 we are at the beginning of the end of the obesity epidemic. But my hope is that readers will get a great deal more from this book than my assessment of the current state of research.

This is not a matter of splitting hairs. Chapter 4 asks readers to look at the health of a small group of Western nations in the grip of an alleged obesity crisis. Although I have less space here than is needed to settle the matter, I try to at least pose a simple question: What happens to the obesity epidemic if we look at health not through the lens of obesity, but from a more global perspective? Is it just possible that obesity looks like a much more frightening problem only so long as obesity is the only thing one looks at?

Perhaps the emergence of opposing views was inevitable. However, by charting the heights (or depths) of obesity rhetoric I do want to suggest that hyperbole surely generates its own resistance and that this resistance represents an important turning point in the history of the obesity epidemic. This leads to the first and most straightforward sense in which I will talk about the end of the obesity epidemic. In Chapter 3 I discuss evidence that obesity rates in many parts of the world have either slowed, plateaued or declined, in stark contrast to the claim that they are accelerating out of control.
